Old man at the bar

There was something admirable in his capacity for self-destruction
No illusions to the extent of damage he done to himself on a daily basis
His liquid and walkers crisp diet obliterating his innards
The inside was reflected outward through the bone, flesh, blood and skin
The pale grey complexion
Riddled with sores
Melting into his dying hair
His blackened teeth
And
Browning gums
The cracks in his hand where red
Almost glowing with slow infection
Dirt firmly planted under his finger nails
Lager son
As he tapped the blood red T
The man was a ghost
Floating through whatever public house could stand his stench
From early doors to closing time
His lager and whiskey chase
Grouse with a bit o’ water
The throat could barely make a sound
Due to the lack of company he kept
It had little use for conversation
Reduced
To a gaping passage for alcohol to flow down
I have become death
Gladly selling the ailing man
His profitable
Suicide
For three twenty a pint
Lager please barman
He sits head in hands
From a distance you wonder if he’s actually dead
So still
Like an old statue left for time and moss
We work round him
So used to the decay
We only care when we notice the smell
His catheter had burst
Pish and bodily fluid pouring out a plastic tube attached to his leg
The fluid dripped
And slowly crept across the floor
Tiny streams in each of the gaps in the floorboard
He sits head in hands
Disgrace and despair
So we phoned him a taxi and shuffled him out
A broken man
Pitiful
But an inconvenience
But he’ll be back
Or maybe he won’t
And I’ll wonder if he found a new bar to haunt
Or maybe
That was the last
Lager I served him
And the last taxi I shuffled him into
Somewhere
Only known to the taxi driver and ferryman
Lying in his bed
Old
Alone
And cold
With only his perished liver for warmth.

Follow the concrete

Follow the concrete
Scattered with chewing gum plaques shaped like broken kisses
Kick a cider can
And watch the flat golden liquid
Spray across the wall
Something smashes in the distance
And someone screams
But nobody turns
Nothing we haven’t seen before
Shopping bags hang from un-kept trees
They float and whisper
But stay to their spot
Almost too scared to leave
Someone loves someone
Helpfully informed in fading graffiti
Which will last longer?
People or a permanent marker?
Don’t worry, reopening soon
A sign catches damp
In the window of an empty shop
Moulding at the frames
Cracked paint
The only customers here are dust and spiders
Nothing we haven’t seen before
Buses belch and stretch and complain
Past
Whilst
Smoke spits out the back
To dance with the mist and rain
An old woman holds onto her shopping for dear life
And her life barely clutches onto her
From beneath
A shelter
Advertising something I can’t afford
And don’t need
A great crack is in a window
Taped now for safety
Someone somewhere is proud with broken knuckles
Nothing we haven’t seen before
A child in a covered buggy
Screams and cries
You can’t see its face
Just its’ thrashing hands
Against steamed plastic
There is a line for five cash machines
And a charity worker set poised and keen
A man
With plastic claws
Grabs at litter
Whilst seagulls fight over a packet the man missed
A beggar asks for spare change
I lie
But offer him a cigarette
Which he takes gratefully
And I light
Cheers
God bless
No bother
Back to the rain, noise and old granite
Nothing we haven’t seen before.

Scratchcard

A single gold coin for thousands
Sounds like a good deal
But that’s the point of gambling
Empty promises
But with that one hope of profit from investment
Choose a number from the plastic display case
Lucky Sevens, Hundred Thousand Gold, Monopoly, Hangman, Bingo
They all play the same
The woman behind the counter smiles
At me
As we both know I am a fool
Scratch the silver skin
With a twenty pence piece
Itch
By
Itch
A group of three is all I need to satisfy my greed
Scratch
Two pound
Scratch
Two pound
Scratch
Five Thousand
A small rush from heart and stomach
Scratch
A Tenner
Scratch
A Fiver
Scratch
Five Thousand
The foil sticks and joins and grabs
To my fingers
Gently I blow it away
This could be it
My winning ticket
Scratch
A Fiver
Scratch
A Pound
A slight hesitation comes
Scratch
Two pound
I smile
Though more at myself than at these winnings
I go back to the shop
To claim it
And buy another.

Morning

Wake up next to the toilet
Face hangs
Like a shopping bag
Pulled and stretched
Stains of un-well spent last minute help me get drunker vomit
That missed the target
The lights and extractor fan hiss and spit
And aid the convulsing pain
Nails slowly scraped under the skull
The red soaked cistern from an angry ulcer
Which
As the night goes on
It opens up in vengeful painful spite
The taste of iron and bile and the regrets of last night
Get up, get clean and dress
Stare into the cup of coffee you don’t remember making
A body barely held together
Everything inside is broken
Except the skin
That holds it all in
A sack of a man but one that must keep going.
